About The Reading Patch

Unlocking the Joy of Reading for Every Learner

Welcome to The Reading Patch, a literacy nonprofit dedicated to helping readers of all ages build confidence, skill, and a lifelong relationship with reading.

Our mission is simple and powerful: to make high-quality reading instruction accessible to beginning and struggling readers, whether they are children, teens, or adults — and to support the families, educators, and mentors who walk alongside them.

Teach a reader to read, and they gain the tools to learn for a lifetime.

Our Journey

At Mrs. Karle’s Reading Patch, we have witnessed the transformative power of reading across decades of teaching and learning. Our work began with a simple yet profound truth:

Confidence is the gateway to reading success.

A confident reader wants to read.
A struggling reader often avoids reading — not from lack of ability, but from lack of confidence.

This insight shaped our approach and has guided our work for more than 30 years, impacting over one million learners through classrooms, homes, and online instruction.

Our Approach

We offer a structured, confidence-first reading pathway designed to meet learners where they are.

While many families use our program with children, our instruction is intentionally designed to support readers at any stage of foundational literacy, including adults who are strengthening reading skills later in life.

Our programs include:
Flexible pacing that allows learners to progress privately, respectfully, and at their own speed:
A 25-lesson introductory sequence that establishes core reading confidence
A 100+ lesson curriculum that builds toward functional fluency and independence

Empowering Through Technology

In today’s digital world, accessibility matters. Our on-demand video reading lessons provide structured instruction in a format that supports learners and those teaching them — whether at home, in community settings, or in adult education contexts.

Our literacy app has been downloaded over 50,000 times and continues to receive strong reviews for its clarity, effectiveness, and encouragement-centered design.

Building Confidence, Eliminating Frustration

We believe reading instruction should reduce frustration — not create it.

Our approach prioritizes:

  • Confidence-building instruction
  • Clear, supportive teaching
  • Respect for each learner’s pace and experience

When confidence grows, motivation follows. When motivation grows, reading becomes possible — and sustainable.

Expanding Horizons

Our commitment to literacy extends beyond reading instruction alone.

We also offer:

  • A best-selling handwriting curriculum, supporting fine-motor and written expression skills
  • Reading-focused books and activities addressing phonics, sight words, alphabet mastery, and handwriting

Together, these resources support the whole learner, regardless of age.

About the Authors of the Reading Patch

Madreen Karle

Madreen Karle is a master first-grade reading teacher with over 30 years of classroom experience, including work in special education and English-language learning environments. She is the author of five books focused on teaching reading and writing and has served as a mentor across multiple literacy platforms, including Mrs. Karle’s Sight and Sound Reading, Mrs. Karle’s Reading Patch, and Mrs. Karle’s Handwriting Patch.

Through decades of teaching, Madreen identified confidence as the critical factor in reading success. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes “sunshine moments” — instructional strategies that help learners experience success early and often.

Meeghan Karle Mousaw
Meeghan Karle Mousaw, Madreen’s daughter, holds a Master’s degree in Special Education and has over seven years of experience teaching reading online. She is the creator of The Handwriting Patch, a curriculum that integrates drawing and handwriting to make learning engaging and accessible.
In 2019, The Handwriting Patch became an Amazon best-seller in its first year, helping thousands of learners develop handwriting skills through a creative, confidence-based approach. Meeghan is also a mother of six children, each with unique learning strengths and challenges, which deeply informs her commitment to inclusive literacy instruction.

Our Commitment

The Reading Patch was founded by the creators of Mrs. Karle’s Sight and Sound Reading and has been featured on NBC media outlets. For more than thirteen years, Madreen and Meeghan have worked alongside educators, families, homeschoolers, and adult learners to provide practical, research-informed literacy instruction.

We continue to collaborate with educational experts to ensure our resources reflect current best practices and remain accessible to learners of all ages.
