Letter A Lesson Plans

Teaching the letter A can be a lot of fun!  You will find below my Letter A Lesson Plans for Kindergarten!  You can also use many of these ideas in preschool as well. 

When teaching the letter A, make sure you emphasize that the letter A is tricky for several reasons.

1. There are 2 fonts to teach the children.  Make sure you explicitly show the children that the a looks like this –> a AND, the a can also look like a circle with a stick next to it.  The confusing fonts really can make learning to read difficult for children.  (Our carousel alphabet explicitly teaches both font styles to the children.  Make sure you purchase and download a copy at the bottom of this post).
2.  We recommend teaching the sort letter A sound first and ONLY TEACHING that short vowel sound before you introduce any other vowel sound.  Use the Letter A short vowel sound as an example and really emphasize the short vowel sound a…  make sure your student understands that that sound before moving on to any other vowel!  We recommend staring with the short letter A sound and only teaching and emphasizing that sound until the children understand that the short a/vowel sound controls the word. Map, Cat, Fat, Rat, Mad…the Short A controls that word.  You can change the word sound and meaning by changing the vowel:  Mop, cot, rot, mod, for instance.

Other Ideas for Letter A Lesson Plans for Kindergarten:

• Question of the Day: Is the Letter A in your name?
• Make Ants with your finger prints
• Have a bucket or bowl in the center of the room. Place magnetic letters or letters in the bucket.  You can also place beginning sound pictures in the bucket and have a child choose a letter and then say a word that starts with that letter OR if they choose a picture, have them say the beginning sound.
